Long age there lived a poor window and her son, Jack. All they had to live on was the mi from cow, Buttercup. Alas, the day came when Buttercup's milk ran dry and Jack's mother decided that she must be sold. So
With firm instructions to ask for a good price, Jack set out to market. On the way he met
 strange, little man.

''That's fine-looking animal,'' said the little man. ''Give her to me and I will give you these five magic beans in exchange."

Before Jack could speak, the little man took buttercup and disappeared.

When Jack arrived home his mother was very angry.

''You stupid boy!" she cried. "what use are five beans to us?"

She took the beans and threw them out of the window and then sent Jack off to bed.

When Jack woke the next morning and looked out of the window, he was amazed to see an enormous beanstalk.

"What could be at the top of it?" he wondered.

He dressed quickly, said good-bye to his mother and began to climb the beanstalk. Up and up he climbed, high into the clouds. At the top of the beanstalk Jack found an enormous castle. He strode up and knocked upon the door.

It was opened by hug woman.

"Be off with you!" she cried. "My husband is a giant."

But Jack pleaded for something to eat and, at last, the giant's wife let him in and gave him some food.

Suddenly the floor began to snake.

"Quick,'' said the giant's wife, '' hide in the oven.''

A moment later the giant lumbered into the room.

"Fee, fie, fo, fum. I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread!" roared the giant.

"Don’t be silly, " the giant's wife. "All you can smell is your dinner. Sit down and eat."

The giant grunted, sat down and began to eat.

When he had finished eating the giant took some bags of gold from a cupboard, poured out a shower of coins and started to count them.

''One, two, three…"

As he did this his head began to not and he soon fell asleep.

Quietly, Jack tiptoed out from his hiding-place and grabbed a bag of gold coins. In a twinkling he had made off with it and was climbing back the beanstalk.

The gold Kept Jack and his mother in luxury for many months but, at last, it was all spent. Then Jack decided to climb the beanstalk again. This time he returned with a wonderful hen which laid golden eggs.

Still, Jack was not satisfied.

"I must climb the beanstalk just once more,'' he told his mother.

This time Jack peeped out from the oven and saw the giant's wife bring him a magical harp.

"Sing." ordered the giant.

And harp began to sing a lullaby. Soon the giant fell asleep. Then Jack crept out, seized the harp and ran.

"Master, Master, wake up!" cried the harp.

The giant woke with a terrible roar, leapt to his feet and chased after Jack.

Jack reached the beanstalk and began to scramble down. The beanstalk shook and creaked as the giant followed him.

"Mother," called Jack, leaping to the ground, "bring me an axe."

Taking  the axe, Jack swung it at the beanstalk. Chop, chop, chop. In three strokes he brought it crashing to the ground. The giant made such an enormous hole when he fell that he never got out of it!

Now Jack and his mother had everything they could wish for. The wonderful hen made them rich by laying golden eggs every morning and the magical harp continued to play its beautiful music.
